Geethanjali is one of the most hyped movies of 2013 as it is the sequel to classic Manichithrathazhu. Priyadarshan has terribly failed to recreate what Fazil has done. Mohanlal as Dr.Sunny has only few screen time yet managed his role very well. The story of the movie is blatantly lifted from Tamil/Kannada movie Charulatha. Geethanjali can nowhere be compared with Manichithrathazhu. Though all the previous inspired ventures of Priyadarshan where enjoyable rides, this is a lazy attempt to achieve nothing. Go for this at your own, while die hard fans of Mohanlal itself will skip this movie.

Geethanjali has got released in 90 theatres all over kerala and the number of screens worldwide is around 150. Initial reports appears that Geethanjali has failed to impress the audience and is getting average word of mouth. The initial hype and the wide release is enough for Geethanjali to be a break even comfortably. The movie has already bagged satellite rights of more than 5 crore. The total budget of the movie is estimated to be around 6-7 crores.
As expected, Geethanjali has got a grand opening with it's first day collection being 90 lakhs. The movie has made a collection of 3.15 crores from 4 days including the weekends. The scheduled release on thursday has helped the movie to survive the negative reviews. The critics and the audience have given a thumbs down for the movie over Thira as Dr Sunny has nothing much to do in this sequel. The movie is expected to face many removals in the coming days as Kamal-Jayaram's Nadan, Kunjacko Boban's Vishudhan and Arya's tamil big budget movie Irandam Ulagam are getting ready to release. The first 7 days collection of the movie has touched 4.25 crores. In the coming days we have to wait and see if Geethanjali will have to face the fate of Lalettan's previous release Ladies and Gentleman.
