Divergent Movie Review

Set in the post-apocalyptic period, Divergent is a Sci-Fi action thriller that passes the test marginally. The film begins on a high but gradually loses the momentum in the middle portion and in the end, the result is an average futuristic action film. Based on a novel with the same title, Divergent has a theme that had some freshness but towards the middle stages a feel of a tournament or a reality show setting is generated.

Humans by virtue of their behavioral pattern is divided into five factions; Dauntless the brave ones, Amity the peaceful ones, Candor the truthful, Erudite the intelligent and Abnegation the selfless are the five factions. At a certain stage of their life, youngsters have to decide on to which faction they belong and for this they have a test. If they fail, they are classified as Divergent who are considered as a threat to the lives of others. The film tries to highlight that the future belongs to those who know where they belong to.

Beatrice, the protagonist during the initial test show behavioral pattern of several factions and is classified as a Divergent but during the choosing ceremony, she says she is a Dauntless.

Rest of the story mainly focuses on the tough test that awaits the new Dauntless youngsters that they have to pass to become a member of the faction. But there are some hidden agenda for the leader of Erudite faction and that is what is all that is shown later on. As I said, the theme had some freshness but it lacks the power to make the viewers engaged fully.

Coming to the acting side, there is no one that impress in a big way and among them, Shailene Woodley as Beatrice and Theo James playing the character of Four, the trainer of Dauntless outshines rest of the acting pack. Kate Winslet appeared in an extended guest appearance as the head of the Erudite faction.

To sum up things, Divergent is not a fully engaging film and with a predictable storyline along with a dull script the film falls under an average class. Again, with some sequels planned to release in the next couple of years, you can give this one a try. My rating is 2.75 / 5
