REVIEW : Follow The Cinema Company
If you ask me to name the best work of Shaji N Karun till date, I would list out Vaanaprastham and Piravi. Shaji's latest work Swapaanam cannot be termed his best and not a classic movie but is definitely a class one that stands tall among the films we call and categorise as GOOD cinema. True to his trademark signature way of film making, the director gives that treatment here in Swapaanam too that narrate the tragic happenings in the life of a Chenda artist.
Unnikrishnan Maaraar is a Chenda artist whose life meet a tragic ending as love, lust, passion and jealousy played its part to pull him down to the level that he never ever deserved.
Director made his presence felt with a class style of presenting a story of this magnitude. Scripting and dialogues played its part in taking the movie to the next level. And of course without performance, the movie can't reach the heights it deserved.
Coming to the performance, Jayaram as Unnikrishnan Maaraar is the soul of the film and this is one of his best and powerful role of his career. Siddique as Narayanan Namboodiri came up with another brilliant acting display and this character was a totally new one in his career. Kadambari portrayed the role of Nalini with ease and she perfectly fitted into that character.
Vineeth as Thuppan was also notable while rest of the supporting casts like PD Namboodiri, Lakshmi Gopalaswamy, Sharath, Indrans and Sajitha Madathil excelled in their respective roles. Few other supporting actors also were good and deserves a mention here but I am not aware of their names.
There are nothing much on the negative side. May be you can say the length. It was a bit too much to sit through with a duration running to two and a half hours.
Technical side is perfect with cinematography taking the film to bigger heights. Shaji himself has a cinematographic background and he has utilized that to get the desired feel for each frame. Background score and music along with the sound design scoring in their respective areas. Chenda melams have been captured too well with sound editing playing its part to give the necessary feel for melams.
So Swapaanam deserves a watch if you love those movies where "art" gets prominence over "commercial" ingredients. I am giving four out of five for Swapaanam.
